“We Can Help”: The FBI’s Pickup Line
The badge. The sunglasses. The terrifying introduction: “I’m Special Agent Smith with the FBI.” They can show up anywhere – and often when you least expect it. They will bring copies of your social media posts, maybe a photo of you, and tell you that with a little cooperation you will be swearing in as a U.S. citizen with a Bald Eagle saluting you. Just promise to spy on your local masjid, pass along some names, and life will be smooth sailing. It won’t happen.
Not even the almighty and all-powerful FBI can change your immigration fate. Why? They are a completely different agency with no influence on your immigration status. “But, this officer was from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.” See the problem here? They have “Enforcement” in their name. Their sole purpose is to enforce U.S. immigration laws (i.e. deport immigrants), not help you stay here.
When the FBI or any law enforcement officer approaches you to “make a deal,” you have no obligation to speak to them. The federal government has perfected the art of intimidating vulnerable immigrants. Don’t fall prey to it.
Next time you are confronted by law enforcement about your immigration status, follow these steps:
1. Tell them, “My attorney will contact you if you provide me with your business card.”
2. Immediately contact an attorney who has experience dealing with federal law enforcement and immigration law.
Remember, you have rights – yes, even as an immigrant – and despite the intimidating approach of federal agents, you have the right to remain silent. And you should exercise that right.
